The guys poke fun at their meteoric domination of the EDM world (I refuse to call their music “house” on principal because the SHM sound is world’s away from the house music I grew up with) with “Where Are They Now?” and “One Hit Wonder” jokes about the future. But were they happy about the wild ride to the top? In the documentary, it appears they weren’t. But then came the apparently reluctant super-stardom, almost as if this side project (remember all three were fairly successful DJ/producers in their own solo careers already) took on a life of its own and the guys were swept up in it. There are the good times, like a hilarious 16-bit-looking retro computer cartoon illustrating how Sebastian Ingrosso, Axwell and Steve Angello met and bonded over their love of the music. Thankfully it wasn’t a banging concert movie highlighting all the hits and the SHM phenomenon (there were still plenty of lasers and fireworks), but a more honest look at the trio’s development and subsequent demise. That being said, I really dug this movie.īacking up a bit, the Swedish House Mafia documentary, Leave the World Behind, premiered at SXSW this week, but those of us in Las Vegas also got a special screening Thursday night at Brenden Theaters in the Palms, courtesy of Red Bull. I like some of the work of the individual members, but never got swept up in the insane phenomenon.
